The Birth Of A Pearl

A Cultured Pearl is exactly the same as a Natural Pearl.  Except that Instead of a particle of sand or coral accidentally becoming lodged in an oyster to act as, what we call, A “Pearl Starter”, man helps by placing the starter in the Oyster.

Mother of Pearl from a particular shell, is broken into small pieces and each piece ground into a perfectly round Beebe (small ball) so that the starter will be an enlarged exact shaped Pearl and the starter does not have properties that will cause a high rejection factor and kill the oyster.

The man made starter Beebe must be properly placed into the meaty part of the oyster best found to produce the finest Pearl.  This is done by forcing open the oyster and with a long tweezer and inserting the starter into the proper location within the oyster.

The oyster is then placed back into the water where it is watched and controlled by Pearl Oyster Farmers.  Each farmer knows what length of time will produce what size pearl.  This is years of cultivation.  The oyster will continually produce a substance that coats the starter to protect itself from the foreign object within its shell.  A Pearl is Born and continues to enlarge as long as the oyster lives.

The Farmer knows approximately how large a pearl will be inside of the controlled oyster but what color is unknown.  It is believed that the combination of the chemicals in the water and the chemical composition of the particular oyster, determines the color.  Usually Black, Blue, Grey and dark color pearls are the product of an Ill Oyster.  Most of the time they develop irregularly and will be seen in odd attractive forms ( called Baroque), instead of perfectly round as with other colors.

95% of the world’s Pearl Oyster Farms are in Japan.  The Japanese are reluctant to publicize their exact methods and procedures in producing pearls.  Their efficiency is amazing in that it practically is non-existing to open one of their pearl oysters and not find at least one perfect pearl or a rare dark colored pearl.

As in all things, some Pearl Farmers have the ability of producing better quality pearls than others.  From these proven quality Pearl Farmers is where INTERNATIONAL PEARL acquires its Pearl Oysters.  Pearl Oyster Farmers  harvest the oysters November through January every year.
